Cars are also collectibles item as well as stamps, coins, paintings etc. Many people around the world proudly have 'antique cars'. The expression antique is used a lot similar to the word ‘classic’. When people talk about old objects they use the word antique. In many occasions using one term or the other may denote the same thing. However, there are some unambiguous differences between the two. If talking about cars the term in this context may depend on the manufacturer.

Definition of Antique Car: Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) is a body deals in the antique cars. AACA publishes Antique Automobile magazine bimonthly for its members. AACA defines the terms as “An antique car is defined as it must be at least 25 years of age or older and is currently functioning and restored to comply with the manufacturers original specifications”. Over the years the definition has been refined to include several classifications of vehicles. AACA added to the definition in 1953 a new Class 18 - 'Antique Cars with four-wheel brakes'. However, there have been many changes in classes from time to time, but the main principle is that the vehicles have to be restored, in good running condition and in excess of 25 years of age. Visit the AACA website for a more comprehensive history of the definition of antique vehicles.

It is of great importance that motor car companies define the term antique vehicle in its own way. An example is that of State of New York, it is much less selective in its definition than AACA (as with many other DMV's across the US). New York's DMV declares all cars in excess of 25 years of age to be issued historical or classic plates. These special license plates are issued only to those vehicles that qualify the test and are necessarily insured under a specialty insurance policy.
